5 Tips for Cleaning with Roommates in Top-Rated Apartments

Just like choosing from top-rated apartments, every combination of roommates are different. Maybe you evaluated top-rated apartments together carefully before choosing the right one. Maybe you met your roommates through a friend of a friend. Or maybe your top-rated apartment’s sorting process matched you randomly. Whether you’ve been friends with your roommates for years or are just getting to know each other, it doesn’t hurt to establish some ground rules for the day-to-day business of apartment living. After all, sharing a space can be a tedious task, especially if your top-rated apartment’s a little short on square footage. Here are a few ways to divide up chores and responsibilities to encourage harmonious living in your top-rated apartment’s space.

1. Set Some Expectations

Sit down with your roommates and define what “clean” means. Is it simply making sure all surfaces are clear and tidy, or does it mean a scrub for spotlessness every day? Come to an agreement about the level and frequency of your cleaning habits and stick to it as best you can.

2. Divide and Conquer

Nothing fosters roommate bitterness quite like the feeling that you are acting as your top-rated apartment’s maid while your roommates lounge in the living room oblivious to the pile of dirty dishes in the sink. Split up tasks like vacuuming, dusting, mopping, and doing dishes by deciding how often each one needs to be done and who is responsible. Trade duties periodically if you want, but make sure the rules are clear.

3. Make a Calendar

Although it may seem a little grade school-ish, putting a chore chart or calendar in the kitchen or other common area is one of the easiest ways to keep each other accountable when it comes to dividing labor.

4. Keep Communicating

Cleaning rules don’t have to be set in stone. If you have a problem with the labor arrangement or need to adjust the schedule, bring it up with your roommates and work out a compromise. It’s much better than letting resentment fester.

5. Be Realistic

Sometimes we get busy and things like dirty dishes go by the wayside. Be lenient if your roommates slip up or if a few things are left undone every now and again. Also remember that if there’s a task you want done that doesn’t seem important to your roommates, you may have to just roll up your sleeves and do it yourself.
