With 2013 right around the corner, many apartment-renters are preparing for the new year. One of the best ways to keep your apartment ratings and your spirits up in 2013 is to kick off the year with a clean apartment. High apartment ratings are a sign of a well-kept home, and winter maintenance can help you achieve those high ratings.
To some, cleaning and reorganizing come naturally and are easy to handle. However, if the question “How clean is your house?” prompts a shifty, “Um, I’d rather not say…”, then setting a goal to clean and organize your apartment in anticipation of the new year may feel a lot like making a daunting New Year’s resolution. However, we have some tips to combat that feeling. One of the most important things to remember about making a New Year’s resolution is to be specific. “I’ll keep my apartment clean” is not as effective as, say, making up a winter cleaning checklist that is easy to adhere to throughout the season. A checklist that can be altered to alternately fit spring, summer, and fall is even better. Here are some simple, specific ways jumpstart your winter cleaning and maintaining your apartment ratings. Break each of these tasks down into steps, and soon you’ll be on your way to a happier, cleaner home!
Donate to Charity
Holidays or no, it’s always the season for giving. Start in your closets. We tend, for many different reasons, to hold on to clothes we never wear. Maybe you have an emotional attachment to a shirt, are waiting until you can fit back into that old pair of pants, or don’t want to accept the fact that your favorite blouse has holes in it. We also put things in the backs of our closets to be forgotten: old projects, shoes without a mate, apartment décor that doesn’t match anything but that we still can’t get rid of. Take a long, hard look at what you’re storing in your apartment’s closets, then donate the things you want to get rid of that are in good quality and toss the rest.
Give Your Apartment a Good Scrub
At the beginning of the year, it may be necessary to give your apartment a good deep clean. Once everything is gleaming, however, you won’t have to clean like that every week! A better way to keep your apartment clean over the season is to break up household maintenance into smaller tasks and space those throughout the week. Take care of the bathrooms on Mondays, vacuum on Tuesdays, and so on. However you choose to break a cleaning schedule up, make it small and manageable.
